Just judging from some of the surprised comments on this very thread, some people still don't even know foto-flame is fake flamed maple, let alone see it advertised by the manufacturers... WebIt's soft, fibrous and has very little detectable grain in it once you sand below the fake flame - it was chosen specifically because it absorbed the photo-sensitive dye well. This is also the cause of the lacquer cracking as the soft porous wood expands and contracts with humidity changes, its quite common on these.
